And Paranoia Sets In…
May 14, 2008 by Portia Rossini
Who steals, who doesn’t? Who takes textures and claims it as their own and who doesn’t? Who proclaims innocent and who should I believe?
Should I stop reviewing or should I keep on doing what I do best?
All these questions just pop into my head every time I log into Second Life. It’s so disconcerting.
One of the latest stores I’ve reviewed recently is accused of being alts of the SeVan store. *sighs* I actually got a headache just thinking about all the chats I’ve had with numerous people to find out the entire story without confusing myself entirely.
Then of course, let me repeat the other story about Minnu Palen. What the hell?
So I asked myself, who can I trust to be genuinely honest creators and who can I not? When I release a blog entry about a fashion review, I just take a deep breath and I hope and pray that if something bad comes up from this particular creator, that I don’t get involved in it.
Honestly, I have no problems with the Axel partners. In fact, they are one of the funniest people I’ve ever met in my second life. And I don’t believe that they are alts of Vanya or Seven (and if they are, you have to show me concrete proof that they are). But then.. I am just now so paranoid..
ABOUT EVERYTHING.
I can’t even step into a store without thinking about whether or not they stole. It takes the fun out of shopping, honestly.
So here’s my question of the day:
Are you as paranoid about shopping as I am? Why or why not?

u need to relax…
put a note at the end of every post “I reviewer, not a detective :P”
I am not that paranoid shopping as i pick very select pieces…
but i would freak if i discovered anything in my inventory as ‘missing’ because LL took it off (has this ever happened?)
Actually, again I am with Portia on this. There are very few stores that i feel concrete about now a days. I feel that I see alot of the same look with a new texture. Frankly, i can understand that in SL there are just so many options, but org. has lacked strongly which has sent me out to many Japanese and Brazilian sims searching for unique looks and something that simply isn’t the same as everyone else. I will in turn say that while venturing through these sims I have seen things by creators that are older products that are very similar to the American and British and Aussie sims so I ask… it this really where are the ideas are coming from? Not, from ones own imagination?

Okay but seriously, if anyone could make these for me to walk around it, I would COMMISSION THEM.

Nope. Not paranoid at all. I probably ought to be, but the way I figure it, I have better things to worry about than if I’m accidentally buying from thieves. I mean, heck, in RL I buy gasoline and bananas and I ought to put myself in the corner forever for doing business with scum like that, so what’s a little potential texture theft? I *do* hope that anyone who’s stealing is caught, and if I KNOW someone’s a crook I’ll avoid them, but to stress about maybes? Nah. Better things to do with my mental energy.
So when someone is selling stolen textures and clothing and it’s known and people flock to the store for the bargain prices - that’s tacky and unfair and should be something people speak up against. That’s being an unethical shopper.
But I am with Craig, we buy from Exxon whose responsible for murders in Africa, Nestle who buys from people who cut off the hands of children, and I could go on with a depressing list of main street corporations whom are supported by our purchases in real life. Yet we are so squeamish about SL - i suppose because we hope it will and shall be a better world being borderless, etc.
I think the best we can do is avoid shopping from known thieves, leave the detecting to those who need to file the DMCA’s and to Linden Labs and those who make content theft investigation their area of expertise and enterprise and just be honest ourselves.
Not all accusations are true, reputations damaged by false accusations are not easily restored. It’s all very damaging. I wonder if some who would never spend 100L for an SL knockoff are equally fastidious in real life, or will they fork over $100 for a LV fake?
